Lenovo acquired IBM Personal Computer Division in May 2005 and completed the initial transition and integration in 2006. In 2008, Lenovo supported Beijing Olympic Games as a global partner to International Olympic Committee. The former local enterprise is realizing the development as an international enterprise. In terms of work, Lenovo cultures have modeled my working attitude of being sincere and rigid, as is the base for the entire career. In this environment, I am motivated and confident to promote myself constantly. In addition to the 8-hour working time, Lenovo is also considerable for its employees. In May 2005, by presenting the offer from Market Management Trainee IBM of PCD, I signed the contract for my first job at IBM Information Center (Asian Games Village), as ThinkPad Product Manager. I am not sure if I have been the last university graduate in the history of PCD, but I am sure that three words will imprint my whole life: i.e., IBM, Lenovo and Think.
I worked for six months in Pacific Century, when I experienced the profound cultural details of IBM Blue Giant: mature, good-mannered, taste-seeking and personal respection. These six months have influenced my subsequent working mode and living habit to different extent.
6 months after, our department moved to Lenovo. Then, I have been aware of huge differences between Chinese and western enterprises. As compared with IBM, Lenovo is more flexible and native in terms of business with deliberate classification and strong enforcement. However, some limitations have also been observed as other Chinese native enterprises before being internationalized. IBM and Lenovo may be described respectively as Grandiose and Aggressive. IBM is often compared to a mature elephant, while I believe Lenovo is an ambitious wolf.
It is an historical event for Lenovo to have acquired IBM PCD. I have happily witnessed this event. I should say I have been lucky in this global M&A of IT; otherwise, it would not have been possible for me to be in contact with such classic brand as ThinkPad and its core business. I have always been proud of being a Thinker as well as a member of Lenovo, an oriental Spartacus for internationalization. We will witness the history in Lenovo and Think.

During the period from September to October 2005, I worked as a trainee at Desktop R & D Department of Lenovo. In April 2006 when I completed my master program, I returned directly to Lenovo as a formal member of Lenovo. The treasured practice in Lenovo has been of extremely important significance for my career. It has assisted me with a profound understanding of Lenovo as well as of my interest and specialty. In university, postgraduates of engineering will normally follow the supervisor or stay in the lab for any research. However, the campus projects generally stress on pre-research and experiments, without any higher extent of engineering. Working as a trainee in Lenovo, I came to have a clear picture of the whole process of a product from design to demonstration and engineering. I learned in practicing about how to apply the theoretical knowledge in the regularized operating procedure of the company for a practical value. Additionally, during the two months of practice, I have also profoundly experienced that working in systematic cooperation with people of different qualifications is the mainstream working model for now and future. The outstanding competence of communication and contact with others has become an importance assurance for working successfully and realizing self value. A system development staff shall not only keep excellent communication with part engineers and software engineers at different levels and equipment suppliers, but more importantly maintain also an excellent communication and interaction with personnel of marketing, quality control, after-sales service and manufacture. During the practice, I have enhanced my capacity for communication and language expression in cooperation from time to time. Additionally, this practicing experience has become an important window for me to adapt to the society. As a new comer in the society out from the ivory tower, one may not adapt to a new environment and may have an accurate orientation for his competence and position without further harboring of the campus and teachers. Practice will minimize such hazardous non-adaptation. By practicing in Lenovo before actually going to the society, we will not be isolated from the university, but we have been provided with an environment for gradual adaptation so that we can understand more about the society. By working, we can also analyze our capacity, preference and interest more accurately so that we understand ourselves better and set up an accurate orientation for the future development. The process of practicing in Lenovo has been extremely critical for my enhancement in all aspects. It has also helped me to adapt promptly to my current job and to play a maximum role.

When practicing at Recruitment Division of Lenovo HR Department two months ago, I had no idea at all that I could join Lenovo. However, this practicing experience ended when I became a formal member of Lenovo. Before coming to Lenovo for practice, I had had a limited knowledge of Lenovo: except for its bigger size, Lenovo showed no fundamental difference from Founder and Tongfang. It was until practicing in Lenovo when how Lenovo worked and recruited that I had come to know not only a propaganda about the international strategy of Lenovo. Personal experience of such boosting trend of Lenovo is an exciting thing. I can’t remember when I have started to deem myself as a member of Lenovo, but I would be sincerely proud when talking about Lenovo. Therefore, I have been extremely happy to “sell” myself to Lenovo. During the two months of practicing at Recruitment Division which was not so long though, I have grown and harvested massively. Without doubt, during the practice, we have done much repeated and relatively routine work, but we have still been acquainted with various useful information. For instance, in assisting the recruitment supervisor in the recruitment for Global Supply Chain, I had a chance to know about the overall structure of the supply chain and the functions of all parts thereof as well as to learn and share some experiences in recruiting the personnel of supply chain. The colleagues there in Recruitment Division impressed me with their strong sense of responsibility to scout for talents. This impression has also enhanced my intimacy for Lenovo to a great extent. In a sense, the two-month practice in Lenovo has change the way for my future. Looking back, I really feel that I have been lucky. I am sincerely appreciated for all colleagues at Lenovo that have helped me. I am also much grateful for Lenovo has given me such chance of practice. I hope I will be able to contribute what I can to the development of Lenovo in my work to start soon.

On June 21, 2006, I was luckily accepted to practice a student research fellow at Cooperative Computing Research Laboratory of Lenovo Research Institute. Before that, I read an article of interview with President He Zhiqiang, which mentioned about the continual technical innovation and frontier technology exploration of the research institute. With these expectations and longings, I started my practice at Lenovo. I was then assigned to the R & D group of “IGRS Mobile”, the task of which is to research on and develop IGRS-based mobile phones that can interconnected with PC and other appliances. In order to have the trainees to access the actual work, the research institute provided each student research fellow with one director. My director was the chief designer of the group. He was kind and friendly. While discussing on technology or chatting with him, I could always feel his sagacity and easy-going. During my six-month practice, I benefited much from his help and guidance in various aspects.
The six-month practice left me with various experiences. However, what impressed me most is: an experience of significant practice will lay an excellent foundation for one to transform from a simple student to a professional, especially in a large-size enterprise like Lenovo with regularized management and full of unique corporate cultures. By staying with the colleagues and participating in projects, one can learn how to handle matters in the job as well as the latest technical knowledge and frontier technology development of relevant fields to enhance the practical experiences of project development. For instance, by attending the weekly meeting of the project group, I could be better acquainted with the project progress, project schedule control, how to resolve particular technical problems and how to communicate with others about the existing problems. By formulating the plan for cooperative work with the colleagues, I could experience profoundly the importance of the team work in promoting the project execution: the progress of each individual will determine the progress of the project. Only with cooperation can the project be executed rapidly. All these have laid an excellent foundation for starting a career and helped me to complete the transformation from a student to a social person at the earliest.
This February, I joined formally Digital Solution Research Laboratory of the research institute. Though it is a new research laboratory, I could start promptly to play a part as a formal staff and get merged into the project team. It is just a start of my journey with Lenovo, thanks to the practice in Lenovo. In the future, I will carry out the corporate cultures of Lenovo: “accurate, practical, trusted and innovative” and make all efforts jointly with all other employees of Lenovo to become an outstanding employee of Lenovo!
